As chair of the Social Justice Ministry, I receive messages from UCC Action regarding situations and issues that UCC wishes to take a stand on, and usually they have with them a reference that I can respond by email, and also a letter that they recommend be sent to various individuals, i.e., senators, representatives, etc. I may make some minor changes in grammer or construction to the recommended letters, and then reproduce them indicating the individuals with the local addresses of each to whom the letters should be sent. | | | In addition to the national issues that UCC Action supports, we in Social Justice also deal with the new Equal Exchange Coffee program. Many thanks to Robin Wisard for her work in collecting the individual orders and placing them, and to our dear Ruth Kaser for handling the money. This program has made me a neophyte coffee drinker because the coffee is so good! For the first time, coffee tastes as good as it smells, at least to me! | | | Thanks to all of you for everything you do. I know that not everyone of you is going to be interested in every thing that is posted on the Social Justice board in the Narthex. We'll try to keep it current and easy to refer to. |

Update on UCC'S Justice and Witness Ministries United Church of Christ’s Justice and Witness Ministries (http://www.ucc.org/jwm/) is a very active website. The UCC sends me e-mail once or more every week regarding issues that are timely and that UCC has a particular stance on. As a rule there is a reference whereby I may respond by e-mail and a suggested letter to senators, representatives, and others in government. I have an e-mail list of our members to whom I forward these messages for their reaction and response. Additionally, I may provide a petition form for signatures or a letter which may be taken and mailed to the addressee(s) by any member or visitor.
We have taken over the Bride’s Room (which will still serve that purpose if someone wants to be married!) and it will now serve the constant purpose of making available information and action tools for this ministry. Thanks to the Property Ministry for their work in preparing this room for use.
Ruth Kaser has taken over the job of managing the Equal Exchange Coffee program and I really appreciate it! By the way, if you haven’t tried any of the Equal Exchange products, you are missing out on something special. The coffee has made a believer of me, as I had always wanted coffee to taste like it smelled, and this does. Yummm.
I do not expect that everyone will be responding to every issue every week, and there will be issues on which you may not agree with the stance the UCC has taken. Hopefully, however, this little room and its displays will help you to gain understanding of the issues that we find important. Please do not hesitate to ask me about anything you see, and if you have e-mail, you may reach me at GLOJustice@aol.com or if not, at (330) 658-8078.
God bless all Jan Daily |
